The Buccaneer is the story of James Roy, one of Roger's Rangers on the American Frontier in 1756. Scots born, James moved to the Colonies at the age of 15, along with his father, Alistair Roy, a Scottish Lord and philanthropist
James has spent the last 15 years growing up amongst both Native Indian and New England cultures, while his father conducted a social experimentation on "Anglicanizing the Red Indian". The relationship between father and son is strained to the point of breaking when James falls in love and wants to marry Wasoona of the Huron Indians.
Each man's true colors are shown and Alistair abandon's his grand experiment, disavows his son, and returns to Scotland. James seeing no difference between white man and red man, marries Chief Blue Duck's daughter.
The War in Europe, between England and France has broken out in America, as both Countries try to stake claim to the region. The colonials of New England against the French from Canada for possession of the lands around The Great Lakes. The Native Indians trapped between the two Countries ambitions are pulled into uneasy alliances. The Mohawk tribes siding with the British, while their traditional enemy the Huron side with the French.
James has enlisted in The British Army as one of Rogers Rangers. An elite guerilla unit formed from Local Men living on the edge of the frontier. Men with special woodland skills and great familiarity with the Native Indians. Hard men who can withstand the elements, who can move quickly and with little gear. Colonial men who are like, the Indian.
James and Wasoona are forced to live on the edge of two worlds. Part of both, uneasily accepted by either.
On a extended scouting mission James' unit is attacked by a Huron War party Led by Wenro, foster son of Blue Duck. It is a complete rout with all but a handful of the Rangers being massecred. James loses his mentor and best Friend, Angus Scobie, who dies at his side. Wounded in the fighting, James escapes.
Having made it back to Fort William Henry and reported in to General Webb, James is given a letter from is father in Scotland. Alistair's health is failing and he pleads for his son to come home.
James returns to the cabin, tells Wassona of the battle, his loss, and his father's letter. They make passionate love in the firelight of the cabin.
James journeys to his father's estate in Scotland to make amends and help his father during his last days. Alistair and his old friend Dr. Winslow have been plotting the marriage of James to his childhood sweetheart, the doctor's daughter Kate. Kate is staying at Roy Manor and James is blindsided by the conspiracy. He is after all, in Love and already married, though not in the eyes of his father.
Alistair has some very important news to share with James and tells him of is grandfather's involvement with captain William Kidd, the Pirate. His father left Alistair a treasure Map to an unclaimed fortune, Allistair shares the treasure map with James. It is a puzzle that has taken him years to understand. James will inherit the map and the treasure along with his father's title and estates when Alistair dies, and he marries Kate.
James has no designs on Kate, refuses the idea, upsets Kate, remains astrainged from his father and the argument between father and son leads to Alistair's death. And the Map has gone missing during the confusion..
.As the new Lord Roy, James attends a social ball in London and is goaded into a duel with Lord Edmund Ashby, whom James kills in self defense. James is wounded and is attended by Dr Winslow. Kate gives the fevered and unconscious James her own special doctoring. James flees back to America, avoiding the wrath of the powerful Ashby family.
Life seams back to normal on the frontier as he and Wasoona prepare for the birth of their child. A British Magistrate in black, backed by a contingent of soldiers arrives and charges James with treason and murder. A scuffle insues and pregnant Wasoona is killed, their cabin burned to the ground and James is carted off, to be shipped back to England to stand trial and be hanged.
James overhears that the Man in Black is high up in the operation of The East India Co. and has a large sugar cane plantation on Jamaica.
In the ship's brig James is befriended by Yousef a reformed African Slaver. Once upon the seas the ship is captured by the Pirate Captain Ferdinand Escobar.
The two men join Escobar's crew and James pits two sides of a divided pirate crew against each other. Taking control of the ship, James sets course for Jamaica to hunt down the man in Black who left his life in ashes. James has devised a plan to cripple him.
Captain Roy's Pirates attacks ship after ship bearing the East India Company flag. Seizing the goods, burning the ships to the waterline killing the crews, and freeing all slaves off the slave ships bound for Jamaica. His vengence rises as he meters out his justice.
In Kingston Jamaica, Lord Henry Ashby seeths in frustration as a pirate called The Buccaneer has a stranglehold on his Commercial Shipping. As three years pass, Lord Ashby teeters on the edge of personal financial ruin, and becomes obsessed with finding the Pirate responsible. A sadistic man to begin with he takes his anger out on his wife, Kate with regular beatings, and loaning her out to his friends for special occasions.
James and his Pirates have built a covert base of operations on a unmolested island in the region. The island is "known" to be the site of human sacrefices and cannibalism by the Carib natives. It is also protected by a natural reef and shallow waters. British ships do not venture there. James has a alliance and trades with the Carib natives.
As his own Marines have been ineffective, Lord Ashby has hired a ship of Hessian Mercenaries, paid killers to find The Buccaneer. They are led by Johannes Scherer, a psychopathic Commander.
On the streets of Kingston, James literally runs into Kate Winslow. Former childhood sweetheart and spurned suitor. Kate is in shock as she heard of James' death during his attempted escape from the King's Justice. She is "Lady Kate" now, is married and has a 5 year old son named Alistair. She invites James to dinner that night.
James accepts and attends her at her villa on her husband's plantation. Her Husband is not there. She seduces James. After their lovemaking her husband returns. After jumping from the balcony James discovers that Kate's husband is indeed Lord Henry Ashby, the man he seeks.
James confronts Lord Henry Ashby, who though very surprised, cannot be bothered at this moment as he has just receiveved word that The Buccaneer's ship has been sited and is being pursued by the Hessians. James is captured and Imprisoned again.
Kate and Rebecca, her maid and confidant, arrange for James escape. James leaves but promises to return for Kate and her son, their son. James heads for Cannibal Island to gather his forces...
